EUGENE, Ore. – Capping a historic 2015-16 campaign in her one and only season with the James Madison Track and Field program, graduate student Amber Monroe placed 15th out of 24 throwers in the women's shot put with a distance of 16.30 meters (53'5.75") in the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at Historic Hayward Field.
Monroe reached a distance of 15.88 meters on her first attempt of the day before improving to 16.30 meters, the second-best throw of her outdoor season, on her second attempt. A third and final throw fell just short of the 16-meter mark when she slipped just enough to affect the throw. A steady rain made conditions less than ideal for all competitiors. Mississippi's Raven Saunders achieved a distance of 19.33 meters (63'5") to take home the title.
The Miami, Fla. native set JMU program records for the indoor shot put (16.46m), outdoor shot put (16.67m) and outdoor discus throw (55.45m). She earned several first-place finishes and the most outstanding field performance award at both the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.
She qualified for the National Championship meet with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla. with a personal record throw of 16.67 meters (54'8.25") on May 28th.
The event concludes JMU's season which saw great success, including a second-place finish at the CAA Championships, a second-place finish at the ECAC Outdoor Championships and four Dukes qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminaries.
