HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshmen
Erin Saunders and
Olivia Viparina will represent the James Madison track and field program at the 2016 USA Track & Field (USATF) Junior Outdoor Championships. The meet will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, California from Friday, June 24 to Sunday, June 26.
Saunders will compete in the 5,000-meter run on Friday night at 9 p.m. PT/midnight ET after running a personal record 17:31.60 in the event at this year's JMU Invitational to qualify. Nineteen athletes are currently scheduled to run in the event, with some representing their respective universities from across the country while others run for elite track clubs and others still arriving in California without affiliation.
Viparina will then take to the track on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. PT/11:45 p.m. ET in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Ledgewood, N.J. native will take on 15 other athletes from a similarly diverse range of backgrounds. She qualified for the event after demolishing her personal record with a time of 10:24.58 to earn a gold medal at the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Championships.
The duo are the first Dukes to compete in the Junior Outdoor Championships since
Morgan Crewe and current teammate
Ebony Owusu-Sampah did so as a freshmen in 2014 at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Any JMU fans traveling west or residing in the area can attend the meet with ticket prices set at 10 dollars for general admission and seven dollars for student/senior eligibility. Parking is available at the stadium for five dollars a day.
