ELON, N.C. – The doubles point proved to be the difference on Saturday afternoon as James Madison men's tennis dropped a 4-3 match at Elon in Colonial Athletic Association action.
The Dukes (3-4, 0-1 CAA) were swept in doubles by the Phoenix (4-5), putting Elon up 1-0. JMU split singles matches evenly, allowing Elon to walk away with the 4-3 victory.
Freshman Tate Steinour moved to 5-1 this spring in singles with a two-set victory (6-3, 6-2) over Louis Rico at No. 6. Freshman Paul Mendoza powered his way to straight 7-5 sets for the point at No. 4 singles over Felipe Osses-Konig.
Senior Brett Moorhead won his third singles match in four contests with a come-from-behind victory (2-6, 6-2, 10-8) over Chris Humphreys at No. 5 singles.
QUOTING HEAD COACH STEVE SECORD
"Today was a tough loss to Elon. It's always disappointing when you lose a 4-3 match but it stings more when its a conference team. We are definitely getting better but have some things to work on. The warmer weather should allow us to play more practice sets and compete and push each other. We have next weekend off and will use the time to work on improving, because evena small percentage will help in these close matches."
