HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis surged past Villanova for a 6-1 win on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Hillside Courts.
JMU concluded the regular season with a 16-6 record, while Villanova fell to 9-12. This is the
winningest season the program has had since 2010, when the Dukes went 15-10.
Senior
Theophile Lanthiez and sophomore
Paul Mendoza began doubles action with a 6-2 triumph at No. 1. Freshman
Alvaro Arce and junior
Pierre Kohler clinched the doubles point at No. 2 with a 6-3 win. Freshman
Gonzalo Adis and sophomore
Damon Roberts completed the doubles sweep for the second straight match with a 7-5 victory at No. 3.
Heading into singles with a 1-0 lead, JMU took advantage by winning the first set in all six matches. Roberts commanded a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Villanova's Thomas Dodson to make it a 2-0 lead. Mendoza picked up his 12th win at No. 1 singles this spring, defeating Villanova's Stefan Suarez 6-3, 6-4, to extend the lead to 3-0.
Adis secured the match for JMU, toppling Villanova's Tommy Mulflur 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore
Tate Steinour notched his fifth win of the spring at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Lanthiez finished the last regular-season match of his collegiate career in stunning fashion at No. 2 singles, defeating Villanova's Tyler Roth 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(4). With the match clinched, he claimed a 10-4 win in a super tiebreak.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
Lanthiez picked up his 14th singles and 16th doubles victories of the spring. After two years at JMU, he has an overall singles record of 33-31 and a doubles record of 36-18.

"They are all sore and tired this time of year, but hopefully doubles can keep it going into the conference tournament. Most of them took care of business in singles – Tate did a good job coming in and getting the win and Fifi getting the win on his last day here was great. We're going to rest tomorrow and work on individual things this week to get ready for Friday."

The Dukes will travel to Elon, N.C. for the 2018 CAA Men's Tennis Championship, beginning Friday, April 20 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. JMU, which will find out its seed early next week, looks to bring home its first conference title since 1991.
