Second Half Goals Down Dukes Against Hofstra

HARRISONBURG, Va. — James Madison scored the first goal allowed by Hofstra in over 400 minutes of play, but a pair of second half Pride goals downed the Dukes, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Sentara Park.
The Dukes drop to 4-6-1 and 1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while Hofstra, the 11th ranked team in the country, moves to 10-1, 2-0 CAA.
The two teams battled throughout the opening period, at a mostly even tempo. The Pride were able to create chances, but the JMU defense stood strong for the first half. Hofstra got off shots in the sixth, 28th, and 30th minutes, but one was wide and the other two blocked.
JMU then got on the board in the 36th minute, as Lexi Vanderlinden drove down the far side before passing it off to Aïmy Diop who was wide open in front of the net and buried her first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead. The goal snapped a four-match shutout streak for Hofstra and was the first goal allowed by the Pride in 442:25 of play.
The Dukes defense would remain strong for the remaining nine minutes, as the teams headed into the halftime break with the hosts leading 1-0.
Hofstra entered the second half with an uptick in their offense. They were able to fire off a pair of shots within the first 12 minutes of the half, before finding the equalizing goal in the 62nd minute off a steal inside the box.
The Dukes found an opportunity to retake the lead in the 71st minute, as Ebony Wiseman took a shot inside the box with a clear view of the goal, but the shot came up saved. The two teams continued to battle through the remainder of the second half, until Hofstra was able to take the lead in the 81st minute on a header just north of the six-foot box for a 2-1 lead.
JMU continued to fight for the remainder of regulation, but Hofstra would hold onto the lead until the final buzzer.
