HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis won for the second time in as many days with a 6-1 victory at Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The Dukes improved to 7-6, while the Spartans fell to 7-4.
The match began with a sweep in doubles, as redshirt junior
Gonzalo Adis and redshirt sophomore
William Karpinski earned a 6-0 victory over Ibrahim Abbas and Ivan Ivars on court three.
The doubles pair of redshirt freshman
Holden Koons and redshirt senior
Paul Mendoza clinched the doubles point for the Dukes on court one. They triumphed over Federico Rebecchini and Ignacio Guevel, 6-3.
JMU carried the momentum throughout singles play. Karpinski was first to finish, defeating Abbas 6-1, 6-1 on court five. Mendoza followed soon after on court four, beating Ivars 6-3, 6-0.
The clinching point came on court six, as freshman
Mario Pena earned his second victory of the weekend. He topped Guevel with a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Koons continued his strong play this year on court one with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Rebecchini. The final point for the Dukes came on court three, as freshman
Oscar Hernandez outlasted Santiago Rendon in three sets. After dropping the first set, 5-7, Hernandez came back to win the final two sets, 6-4, 1-0 (4).
