QUICK HITS
- James Madison will return to the Atlantic Union Bank Center on Thursday, looking to bounce back from a difficult road decision against Elon. Standing in the Dukes' way is UNCW, who enters Thursday's matchup on a six-game winning streak.
- On Monday, the Dukes lost at Elon, 90-67, as the Phoenix knocked down 17 three-pointers.
- JMU is looking to continue its home cooking, as the Dukes are 7-1 this season on their home floor and 17-5 all-time at the Atlantic Union Bank Center. The Dukes have not won eight home games in consecutive seasons since 2014-15 (12) and 2015-16 (12).
- James Madison ranks 27th in the nation and first in the league with a 48.0% field goal percentage so far this season. Among players with at least 50 field goal attempts, three Dukes - graduate transfer Alonzo Sule (.682), redshirt freshman Justin Amadi (.647), and redshirt freshman Terell Strickland (.557) - are all shooting at least 55% from the field. Both Sule's and Amadi's percentages are top five in JMU history, and would rank inside the top 10 in the country.
- Redshirt junior Vado Morse leads JMU on offense with 12.9 points per game and is shooting an outstanding .902 (37-for-41) from the free throw line, good for the top percentage in the league. Morse missed his first free throw in three games at Elon.
- JMU is forcing 17.67 turnovers per game thus far in 2021-22, 16th-most in the country, The Dukes' 25 forced turnovers against William & Mary was the most against a Division I opponent since 2007, and fifth instance of 20+ forced turnovers this season.
- The Dukes have found success at the free-throw line as of late, shooting above their season average of .703 in each of their first four conference contests, making 18 free or more throws in four of their last five games.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
- After starting the season just 3-5, UNCW has rebounded to win its last six, with its last five wins each coming by single digits.
- Senior guard Jaylen Sims leads the Seahawks with 14.0 points per game, while graduate student Mike Okauru (11.6) and junior Shykeim Phillips (10.5) also average in double figures.
- Okauru also leads UNCW with 42 assists and ranks sixth in the league with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio.
- The Seahawks have taken care of the basketball, with 10 or fewer turnovers in each of their first three conference games.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Dukes and Seahawks will face off for the 79th time on Thursday, with UNCW holding a slight edge in the series, 41-37. The two sides had met every season from 1979-80 through 2019-20, but did not meet last season due to the schedule alterations from COVID-19.
- JMU has taken the last three contests in the series, starting off the streak with a wild 104-95 road victory on Feb. 2, 2019. That marked the most recent time JMU scored 100 points in regulation against a Division I opponent.
