- James Madison men's hoops will wrap up its home non-conference slate on Sunday afternoon, welcoming the Sharks of LIU to the Atlantic Union Bank Center for a 2 p.m. tip.
- Last time out, the Dukes cruised to a 106-43 victory over Gallaudet on Dec. 10. With the win, JMU moved to 15-2 in non-conference home games under Mark Byington. The Dukes have won the last 12 such games, its longest streak of non-conference home wins since winning 21 in a row from 2007-2011.
- Graduate student Alonzo Sule earned the first double-double of his JMU career against Gallaudet. The Houston native scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, with seven coming on the offensive glass for the first time since February 2019.
- Fellow graduate student Vado Morse led JMU with 22 points, which included a career-high six three-pointers. The 22-point effort was the 14th time Morse has scored 20 or more in his JMU career.
- JMU had 51 rebounds to outrebound Galladet by 20 and has outrebounded opponents in eight of its first 11 matchups.
- Nationally, JMU is inside the top 10 in six statistical categories - first in scoring margin (28.7), second in scoring offense (90.5), third in steals per game (11.5), and ninth in field goal percentage (.504), turnovers forced per game (19.5) and turnover margin (6.1). JMU is the only program in Division I to rank inside the top 10 in all six statistics.
- JMU's field goal percentage numbers have been buoyed by Justin Amadi (.739), Mezie Offurum (.641), Xavier Brown (.613), and Terrance Edwards (.602), who all are shooting above 60% with at least 30 field goal attempts this season.The Dukes' defense has forced 20 or more turnovers in six games this season. Of 214 opposition turnovers, 127 (59.3%) have been steals by JMU. All six instances of 20 or more opponent turnovers have featured at least 13 JMU steals.
SCOUTING THE SHARKS
- Long Island is 1-9 in its first season under head coach Rod Strickland - former NBA point guard father of JMU guard Terell Strickland - and is coming off a 76-59 loss to UAlbany on Wednesday.
- The Sharks are led by sophomore Marko Maletic who is averaging 15.7 points per game.
- LIU gives up the fourth-most points per game in the country, allowing 83.1 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY
- JMU and LIU have met three times - the Dukes have taken all three matchups, all of which came prior to the 2019 merger between LIU Brooklyn and Division II LIU Post. JMU did not face LIU Post prior to the merger.
- The most recent matchup between the teams took place in the 2013 NCAA First Four in Dayton, Ohio. JMU won 68-55 behind a 20-point performance by A.J. Davis. as the Dukes advanced to play No. 1 seed Indiana.
