Dukes Sweep Final Day at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 22 James Madison softball team swept the final day of the Charlotte invitational with a 11-5 win over UConn (3-6) and a 4-1 win over Campbell (3-4).

The Dukes had four home runs Sunday from Hannah Hennessy, Kayla Boseman, Hannah Shifflett and Emily Phillips. Hennessy hit four RBI's and Shifflett tallied three

Game 1
After a home run in the first inning put UConn in the lead, Hennessy responded with a homer of her own in the second inning, tying the game 2-2. Bernett hit an RBI single in the third inning that brought Reed Butler and Phillips in for two more runs, followed by a home run from Boseman to put the Dukes in the lead 6-3.

Morgan Mesaros and Shifflett kept the momentum going for JMU, each hitting RBIs in the fifth, increasing the Dukes lead to 9-3. After a pair of runs from the Huskies, the Dukes secured the win in the seventh inning with a homer from Shifflett, driving in Rogers for the first run of her collegiate career.

Alissa Humphrey tallied her first win of the season with 12 strikeouts over 7.0 innings.

Game 2
The Dukes opened up yet another game with a home run, this time from Phillips, giving JMU an early advantage in the first. Campbell responded in the bottom of the first with their own run, however, the teams remained tied up through the top of the sixth until Phillips hit a sacrifice fly to left field, driving Abbie Campbell in to put the Dukes in the lead. Hannah Hennessy then hit a single in the top of the seventh that brought in Butler and Josey Polk for runs off a throwing error. The Camels were unable to respond in the bottom of the seventh and JMU came out on top 4-1.

Alexis Bermudez won her second game of the season, notching seven strikeouts over 7.0 innings.

The Dukes are heading down to Tampa, Fla. Feb. 25-27 for the UCF Knights Classic, where they will face Oakland (9:30 a.m.) and Ole Miss (12 p.m.) on Friday, UCF at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, and Florida at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
