UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – James Madison men's tennis closed out their season with a tough 5-2 loss to Penn State Sunday evening at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center.
The Nittany Lions moved to 13-11, while the Dukes finished their season at 14-6.
JMU started strong by coming from behind to claim the doubles point. After Penn State won the match on court one,
Oscar Hernandez and
William Karpinski beat Harrison Janes and Alexander Karman on court three, 6-4. The duo finished the spring with an unblemished 7-0 doubles record.
Mathieu Josserand and
Edson Sanchez quickly followed that up with their own 6-4 win on court two to clinch the point against Sam Bossem and Loren Byers.
The Nittany Lions would win the first three singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. On court three, Bossem beat
Youssef Sadek, 6-4, 6-2. That was followed by a 6-3, 6-3 victory for Bora Sengul over Karpinski on court two.
Holden Koons fought hard to force a tiebreaker in the second set, but fell to Miko Eala, 6-3, 7-6 (3), on court one. Koons finished the season with an 18-2 singles dual-match record and a 29-10 mark overall. That included a career-best 12-match win streak.
The Dukes cut the deficit to 3-2 with a victory on court four. Sanchez completed his strong outing with a three-set victory against Malik Bhatnagar, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
Penn State would go on to clinch the win on court five, as Byers bested Hernandez, 6-1, 6-2. Penn State would tack on their final point with a win on court six, as Charl Morgan defeated Josserand, 6-4, 6-4.
