DURHAM, N.C. -- James Madison made the most of its opportunities, scoring on each of its two penalty corners to propel past Duke, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
JMU has won five consecutive matches, including three against ranked opponents to improve to 7-3. The Blue Devils drop to 4-6 (0-2 ACC) and head to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face No. 15 Wake Forest on Sept. 30.
Four JMU players found the back of the net with freshman Alice Roeper earning credit for the gamewinner. Senior Eveline Zwager tallied three points off one goal and one assist. Junior Brandelynn Heinbaugh tied her career high with six saves, three in the first quarter.
How It Happened
Quoting Head Coach Christy Morgan
"Today was a good day," said Morgan. "We haven't beaten Duke in a while. We always compete with them, and today was a day that we connected, we finished, and our corners were one hundred percent. Everybody was engaged and all-in. So we competed really well today and it's something we can build off of. "

How It Happened
- Duke had three shots on net in the opening frame, however Heinbaugh stayed solid to keep the Blue Devils scoreless.
- JMU broke through on its first corner of the day at the 6:50 mark of the second quarter. Freshman Alice Roeper recorded the strike with assists from senior Kara McClure and junior Mia Julian.
- Early in the third quarter, senior Emily Harrison added some insurance with a hard strike that went off the Blue Devils' goalie into the top left corner.
- On James Madison's second corner of the game, Zwager made a no-look pass behind her to classmate Morgan Merritt who delivered a rocket to the back of the net to make it 3-0 Dukes.
- The Blue Devils responded early in the final period, pouncing on a loose ball off a rebound.
- Minutes later, Zwager dribbled her way past multiple defenders and drove along the goal line for the goal to give JMU a 4-1 lead.
- Duke got on the board one more time before the final whistle as JMU came out on top, 4-2.
- The Blue Devils still lead the all-time series, 22-12-1.
