JMU Drops First Games in Charleston Invitational
Â
Charleston, S.C. – James Madison softball opened its season in Charleston S.C. on Friday, falling to Chattanooga and Indiana State.
Â
The Dukes start the season 0-2, while Chattanooga and Indiana State each start 1-0.
Â
Chattanooga 4, JMU 3
Junior Alissa Humphrey was solid on the mound across four innings with nine strikeouts. Humphrey gave up zero walks, allowing three runs across six hits.
Â
The Dukes scored first, as graduate student Hannah Shifflett led off with a walk, then stole second and third to score on graduate student Hallie Hall's sac fly to put the Dukes up 1-0.
Â
Chattanooga answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homerun to put the Dukes in a 2-1 hole.
Â
Redshirt junior Reed Butler doubled in the top of the second, Shifflett had a single in the third and junior Kylee Gleason singled in the seventh to add hits for the Dukes, but Chattanooga extended its lead to 4-1 with runs in the fourth and fifth.
Â
Freshman Bella Henzler recorded her first collegiate hit by knocking in two runs with an inside-the-park home run to cut the Dukes' deficit to one in the top of the seventh, but the late rally was not enough to push the Dukes over the Mocs as they fell one run short of the victory.
Â
Indiana State 2, JMU 0
James Madison wasn't able to rebound in the second game of the day and fell just shy of another win against Indiana State.
Â
Sophomore Lexi Rogers went the distance in the circle for the Dukes, recording five strikeouts and yielding two runs across three hits in her seven innings.
Â
Graduate student Hallie Hall, freshman KK Mathis, junior Kylee Gleason and redshirt junior Reed Butler all tallied hits for JMU.
Â
Indiana State scored from a walk in the third inning and a home run in the fourth to give the Sycamores the win.
Â
Up Next
James Madison will meet Indiana State again tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. before facing host College of Charleston at 5:30 p.m. The evening game will be broadcast on FloSports.
