FARMVILLE, Va. – James Madison cruised through singles play, winning each match in straight sets to upend Longwood, 6-1, in non-conference men's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon at New Lancer Courts.
The Dukes improved to 9-7 on the year, while the Lancers dropped to 5-9. It was JMU's fourth straight victory against Longwood and the 10th over the previous 11 meetings dating back to the 2009-10 season.
Longwood earned the early lead by taking two of three doubles matches, before the Dukes responded with dominant play in singles. This is the third time this season JMU has won all six singles matches but for the first time on the road.
Holden Koons and
Francisco Sinopoli each went 2-0, while
Julian Lozano,
Aathreya Mahesh,
Youssef Sadek and
Edson Sanchez each picked up singles triumphs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU gained the early advantage on court one, as Koons and Sinopoli defeated Guillermo Cagigas and Timeo Puech, 6-3. For the JMU duo, they moved to 5-0 this spring, all at the No. 1 spot.
- The Lancers evened things up on court three with a 6-4 win by Ernest Rocabert and Alejandro Uribe over Mahesh and Sadek.
- Longwood claimed the doubles point and 1-0 lead on court two, where Yoav Weinberg and Luis Reis downed Lozano and Sanchez, 7-5.
Singles Play
- Mahesh squared the match at 1-1 on court six, as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Reis.
- Sanchez conceded just one game to Uribe, rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 win on court five to give JMU a lead it wouldn't give up.
- Lozano extended the advantage to 3-1 over on court two, as he took down Weinberg, 6-3, 6-2.
- The clinching point came on court one, where Koons pulled away from Cagigas, 6-2, 6-3.
- The Dukes added to the lead with two more triumphs on courts three and four. Sadek handled his business with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Puech, before Sinopoli dispatched Rocabert, 7-5, 6-3.
