Dukes Face Army West Point in First Round Test

HARRISONBURG, Va. – No. 7 seed James Madison lacrosse will begin is 2023 NCAA Championship journey with a home matchup against the Army West Point on Friday afternoon at Sentara Park.

First draw is set for 2 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+ with radio broadcasts on the JMU Radio Network.

Friday will mark the first matchup between the two programs.

Should JMU advance, it will play the winner of Maryland and Drexel, which will follow the JMU-Army matchup in a neutral contest at 5 p.m. on Friday.

DUKES FACE ARMY WEST POINT IN NCAA FIRST ROUND TEST
- No. 7 James Madison lacrosse begins play in its eighth consecutive NCAA Championship against No. 14 Army West Point in a matchup featuring two teams with a combined 32-5 record.
- JMU has played in every single NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship since 2015, holding a 7-6 record in that span. JMU is 28-3 overall since March 16, 2022.
- JMU is led by redshirt junior Isabella Peterson with 78 goals and 98 points, ranking third and tied for second in the country in those respective categories. She has 16 hat tricks including in each of her last nine games. Peterson has also racked up 81 draw controls thus far and is the only player in the country with at least 70 goals and 80 draw controls.
- Senior Tai Jankowski has 50 goals and 20 assists this season including 10 hat tricks, scoring in every single game up until the AAC championship against Florida.
- The Dukes' have been effective from the eight-meter with a .526 free-position percentage, including a 25-for-46 (.543) mark since April.
- The defense has held opponents to just 7.26 goals per game and 16 opponents to single-digit goals. JMU has held opponents to a .257 free-position percentage.
- Redshirt senior Mairead Durkin has caused 43 turnovers, with multiple in 14 games. She is ninth in the country with 2.26 caused turnovers per game.
- In goal, redshirt senior Kat Buchanan is third in the nation with a 7.47 goals-against average and 16th with a .482 save percentage.
- The Dukes have dominated the shot clock, out-shooting opponents in every game but one this season. JMU averages 9.6 shots more than its opponents per game.
JMU IN THE NCAA TOURNEY
- JMU will make its 19th appearance in the NCAA Championship and eighth straight dating back to 2015.
- The Dukes are 14-17 all-time in the tournament. They are 8-3 at home, 1-10 away and 5-4 in neutral-site games.
- JMU has produced a victory in 11 of its previous 18 berths in the NCAA Championship, having done so in both 2021 and 2022.
- The Dukes last played home postseason games on their way to the 2018 national championship, defeating Virginia 15-12 in the second round before slugging their way past sixth-seeded Florida 11-8 in the quarterfinals.
