LYNCHBURG, Va. – James Madison was points away from victory before a late surge pushed Missouri past the Dukes, 4-3, in a neutral-site, women's tennis match Saturday morning at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
The Tigers earned their first win of the spring, moving to 1-6, while the Dukes fell to 2-3 on the season.
Missouri narrowly won the doubles point and the teams split singles play, with all but the final match ending in straight sets. JMU led 3-2 before Mizzou won the final two bouts to take home their initial win.
JMU's singles victories came from
Daria Munteanu on court two,
Ines Oliveira on court three and
Reka Matko on court five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- Missouri's Andrea Artimedi and Emelie Schwarte took down Matko and Alexandra Prudente, 6-3, on court three.
- The Tigers secured the doubles point on court two, as Romary Cardenas Rifka and Gabriela Martinez held off Cate Broerman and Hope Moulin in a tiebreak, winning the match 7-6 (5).
- Mizzou's tandem of Inah and Mae Canete also led Munteanu and Oliveira 6-5 on court one when the bout went unfinished.
Singles Play
- JMU tied the match at 1-1 when Matko rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cardenas Rifa on court five.
- Missouri took the lead back on court one, where Mae Canete downed Broerman, 6-1, 6-2.
- The match was once again all square, at 2-2, as Oliveira dominated the second set for a 6-4, 6-0 win against Martinez on court three.
- JMU took its first lead, at 3-2, as Munteanu defeated Inah Canete by scores of 6-2, 6-4 on court two.
- Missouri made it a 3-3 tie on court six, as Prudente fell to Artimedi by scores of 7-6 (5), 6-1.
- In the final match, Moulin forced a third set and held a 5-4 lead, leading 30-love before Schwarte rallied back. The Tiger led 6-5 but was down 40-love before reeling off four straight points to earn the decisive 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 triumph.
