ELON, N.C. – James Madison rallied with a pair of three-set singles victories to upend Elon, 4-3, in non-nonconference men's tennis action Tuesday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Dukes won their sixth match in a row, improving to 7-5, while the Phoenix fell to 8-5 on the year. It's the second win ever versus Elon for the Dukes and their first victory ever at Elon in five tries.
Julian Lozano went 2-0 on the day with wins in doubles and singles, while
Youssef Sadek and
Mario Pena came back from a set down to clinch the victory for JMU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU opened doubles with a solid victory on court one, as Lozano and Esteve Agusti cruised to a 6-1 victory against Dylan Heap and Daniel Martin.
- Elon evened things up on court two, where Juan Sengariz and Ben Zipay downed Sadek and Markus Giersiepen in a tight match, 7-5.
- The doubles point would be decided in comeback fashion on court three. Edson Sanchez and Harrison Lee trailed the team of Eska Antinheimo and Jack Curtis 5-4 before reeling off three straight games for a 7-5 triumph.
- It's the fourth straight match that courts one and three have both won to give JMU a 1-0 match lead.
Singles Play
- JMU's lead wouldn't last, as Elon evened it up at one apiece with a straight-set win on court four. Sengariz capped off his 2-0 day with a 6-2, 6-2 win versus Giersiepen.
- The Dukes reclaimed the lead (2-1) over on court two, as Lozano rolled past Martin, 6-1, 6-2.
- Elon took its first lead of the day with consecutive wins on courts five and three. Curtis defeated Francisco Sinopoli, 6-3, 6-1, before Antinheimo took a 6-2, 6-4 win from Agusti.
- The loss for Agusti snapped his six-match singles win streak.
- The Dukes wouldn't go away, as Sadek evened the match at 3-3 with a huge win on court one. After dropping the opening set to Veljko Krstic, the Cairo, Egypt, native bounced back for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
- Pena fell behind a set and needed a two-point win in a tiebreak to force a third set versus Alonso Roca. He rattled off five straight games in the third to earn the win, at 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
