Dukes Split Two Games on Opening Day of ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. – James Madison split a pair of games on Friday at the ASU Invitational, defeating Omaha 8-4 but falling to host Arizona State 5-2 at Farrington Stadium.

JMU moved to 11-5 with the split, while Omaha fell to 11-7 and Arizona State improved to 13-6.

A trio of Dukes - Hallie Hall, KK Mathis, and Abbie Campbell - all hit their first home runs of the season in the 8-4 win over Omaha. Jasmine Hall finished 3-for-3 at the plate with career-high three doubles – which also tied a school record. In the circle, Alissa Humphrey pitched 4.2 innings, striking out a season-best seven batters. Kirsten Fleet (3-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen, fanning three batters.

In the evening game against Arizona State, Pitcher Payton List hit the first home run of her career to give JMU a 2-0 lead in the second, but the Dukes did not muster any more runs for the rest of the game. List also completed 3.2 innings in the circle, striking out three batters but yielding five runs. As a team, JMU managed only four hits.

How It Happened

- Alissa Humphrey sat down the Mavericks in order with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the first.
- Hallie Hall hit her first home run of the season to straightaway center, giving JMU a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
- A pair of doubles gave Omaha a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- Bella Henzler kicked off the top of the sixth with a triple, and Jasmine Hall tied the score at 2-2 with a double off the right field wall.
- KK Mathis gave the Dukes a 5-2 lead with a three-run home run to right field, her first homer of the 2024 season.
- Abbie Campbell launched a solo home run to left field, padding the JMU lead to 6-2 in the top of the seventh.
JMU 2, Arizona State 5
- Madison Edwards reached on an error, and List launched an opposite-field home run to give JMU a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
- Arizona State got on the board in the fourth, first with a solo home run by Kayla Lissy.
- The Sun Devils would score five in the frame – an RBI triple and a pair of wild pitches.
- JMU loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh, but three strikeouts ended the game with no runs coming across.

Game Notes
- JMU's three home runs versus Omaha is the second time this season the Dukes have hit three home runs in a game this season. The other occurrence came against Lehigh on Feb. 18.
- JMU reached double-digit hits for the sixth time this season versus Omaha, finishing with 11.
- Jasmine Hall's three doubles versus Omaha is a career-high, and tied a school record set by Hannah File on May 5, 2019.
- Humphrey's seven strikeouts against Omaha are her season high.
