LYNCHBURG, Va. – James Madison battled tough, but Michigan State claimed the doubles point and registered three singles wins in straight sets to down the Dukes, 4-1, in women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans (5-2) took the early 1-0 lead after capturing a 6-2 win on court two and 6-3 victory on court three. MSU also led 4-3 on court one when it went unfinished.
The Spartans doubled its lead to 2-0 when Amara Brahmbatt upended Mia Saveljic, 6-2, 6-1 on court five.
JMU (1-8) got on the scoreboard over on court four, as Sophie Williams turned in a solid performance in the second set to earn a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Oriana Parkins-Godwin.
MSU extended its lead back to two, at 3-1, as Ellie Blackford had multiple match points before eventually downing Ines Oliveira, 6-1, 6-4, on court three.
The clinching point came on court one, where Lissa Vehvilainen pulled away from Daria Munteanu for a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Two other bouts went unfinished, which included Elena Kraleva, who was on match point with Matilde Morais on court two, at 7-5, 6-5 (40-30).
JMU has next week off and returns to the court on Saturday, March 1 when it travels to Richmond to face in-state foe VCU at 1 p.m.
