HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison returned to the win column in convincing fashion, taking a pair of doubles courts and winning three singles matches in straight sets to down Southern Miss, 4-0, in Sun Belt Conference women's tennis action on Saturday morning at Hillside Courts.
The Dukes (5-10, 3-2 Sun Belt) moved above .500 in league matches and needed just 122 minutes to defeat Southern Miss (4-8, 0-5 Sun Belt). JMU is now 2-0 all-time versus the Golden Eagles, joining its 4-1 win last season in Harrisonburg.
Elena Kraleva and
Hope Moulin both went 2-0 on the day, while
Daria Munteanu clinched the decisive fourth point in singles play.
JMU took the early 1-0 lead after claiming two of three doubles bouts. Moulin and
Sophie Williams gave JMU the advantage with a 6-3 victory on court three against Sakura Sudo and Miranda Xu.
In a tight match on court one, Hannah Chambers and Jordan Parker won a crucial deuce point to hold serve and close out the win, at 6-4, over Munteanu and
Ines Oliveira. With doubles coming down to court two, JMU needed to break USM's serve late in the match and did just that.
Southern Miss battled back to square the match, at 5-5, before Kraleva and
Mia Saveljic broke the Golden Eagles' serve to take a 6-5 lead. In the ensuing game, the JMU duo held its serve to defeat Malannia Vashkevich and Talia Wunnenberg, 7-5, and clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, JMU earned opening-set wins on five of six courts, however JMU evened things up, forcing a third set in the match it fell behind initially. The Dukes had strong showings on majority of the courts, with the three victors not conceding more than four total games to close out the day.
Kraleva was first to finish, as she downed Vashkevich, 6-2, 6-1, on court two to double the lead. Seconds later, Moulin finished off a masterful second set, as she rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win against Gagana Mohan Kumar on court six.
Needing just one more result, Munteanu clinched the team win for the Dukes on court one, taking down Chambers by a 6-1, 6-3 score.
Elsewhere, JMU had leads on all three remaining courts, as Oliveira was up in the third set on court three (2-6, 6-2, 2-0 UF), while Williams (6-4, 3-2 UF) and Saveljic (6-4, 2-1 UF) were each a set up on courts four and five, respectively.
The win was JMU's second 4-0 result of the season, joining its triumph at VCU back on March 1. It was also its largest margin of victory in an SBC match since a 7-0 victory at ULM back on March 28, 2024.
JMU is back on court tomorrow morning when it hosts #60 South Alabama at the East Campus Tennis Courts at 9 a.m.
