Dukes Bested by App State, 4-2, in Tight League Bout

HARRISONBURG, Va – James Madison battled into third sets in three singles matches, but App State used the doubles point and three singles victories to upend the Dukes, 4-2, in Sun Belt women's tennis action on Sunday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
The Mountaineers (7-4, 1-1 SBC) claimed the doubles point with victories on courts one and three and won a pair of singles bouts in straight sets before pulling away in the third set of another to claim the tight win.
Up 1-0, App moved the lead to 3-0, as Alexi Cleveland downed Hope Moulin, 6-3, 6-3, on court six, while Savannah Dada-Mascoll won a second-set tiebreak to defeat Daria Munteanu on court one, at 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Needing wins on each of the final four courts, JMU (3-9, 1-1 SBC) got on the board over on court five, as Mia Saveljic earned a close 6-4, 7-5 triumph against Ruby Broadbent. Each of the final three bouts went to third sets, which included JMU forcing a third on courts two and three.
After struggling in her second set, Ines Oliveira bounced back in the third on court four, building a big lead before holding off Olwyn Ryan-Bovey by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Kraleva overcame a 15-40 score while up 6-5 to evade a tiebreak with Taya Powell to win the second set, setting up a third. In a back-and-forth third, the match went unfinished at 3-6, 7-5, 3-3 when App clinched the match on court three.
In that match, Naledi Manyube broke Sophie Williams twice in the final frame to win the decisive fourth point, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
With the win, it was App's second straight against JMU, joining its 4-3 victory in the 2024 Sun Belt Championship second round.
JMU is back in action on Friday, Mar 14 when JMU travels to Atlanta, Ga., to face Georgia State at 2 p.m.
