HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison women's tennis sent its four seniors out on a winning note, capturing the doubles point and winning three singles bouts to down Georgia Southern, 4-2, for Senior Day on Friday at the East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Dukes (8-12, 6-4 Sun Belt) earned doubles victories on court two and three for the early lead while later producing singles wins on courts two, four and five to clinch the Sun Belt Conference triumph.
It was the final home match for seniors
Elena Kraleva,
Hope Moulin,
Ines Oliveira and
Alexandra Prudente, as they conclude the 2025 home slate with a 4-2 record.
Mia Saveljic and
Sophie Williams both notched wins in doubles and singles play, while
Daria Munteanu added the third singles triumph for JMU.
JMU opened with a dominant 6-2 win for Kraleva and Saveljic on doubles court two against Hannah Eifert and Franzi Heinemann. With the other matches both at 5-4, with JMU and Georgia Southern (10-9, 2-6 Sun Belt) each leading one, the tandem of Moulin and Williams closed out doubles with a thrilling 6-4 win on court three over Nanaka Kijima and Mackenzie Leopold.
In singles play, Munteanu rolled past Evelyn Warkentin, 6-2, 6-2, on court two to double JMU's lead to 2-0. However, Southern answered back with victories on courts one and three to square the bout at two apiece. Juliette Nask first won 6-3, 6-4 against Kraleva on court one, and despite forcing a third set on court three, Oliveira dropped a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 decision to Heinemann.
The second half of doubles play were very competitive, with one going to a third set and another needing a tiebreak in the opening frame.
JMU regained the lead, at 3-2, on court four where Williams stormed back, conceding four games over the final two sets to rally past Leopold, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Over on court five, Saveljic was up a set and trailing 3-2 before breaking Kijima's serve twice and rattling off the final four games en route to a 6-3, 6-3 win to clinch. Elsewhere, Moulin was in control of the second set after a grueling first-set win, as she led Amelie Rosadoro, 7-6 (3), 3-1.
JMU closes the regular season on Saturday, April 19 at Coastal Carolina. That match is set for a 10 a.m. start in Conway, S.C.
