BOONE, N.C. – A four-run third inning for James Madison baseball carried it to a 10-6 win over App State in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium in Sun Belt Conference action.
The Dukes snapped a five-game losing streak, improving to 13-27 (6-12 SBC). The Mountaineers dropped to 21-18 (11-7 SBC).
Four Dukes recorded multi-hit games, led by freshman
Jack Anderson. The Medina, Minn. Native went 3-for-3 with a run scored, a walk, a double and two RBIs. Freshman
Adam Horvath (2-0) tossed 5.1 innings of relief to earn the win, striking out two while allowing three runs.
How It Happened
First Inning
A wild pitch allowed the Mountaineers to get on the board first for the first time in the series, leading 1-0.
Third Inning
JMU sent nine batters to the plate in the third and came away with four runs from it, beginning the inning with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. After a sacrifice bunt moved the two runners, a wild pitch and groundout tied and then gave the lead to the Dukes. Back-to-back base hits, a double and a single respectively, from junior
Wyatt Peifer and freshman
Reece Moody plated two more runs to make the score 4-1.
App State responded with a run of their own on a single, bringing the score to 4-2.
Fourth Inning
Sophomore
Kyle Langley doubled in junior
Maddux Fleck after reaching on an error to lead off the inning, pushing JMU's lead to three at 5-2.
Fifth Inning
Peifer scored to add a run for the Dukes, drawing a walk to lead off and moving to second on a bunt. Anderson followed with his second base hit of the day, a single that would score Peifer and give JMU a 6-2 lead.
Seventh Inning
Doubles coming back-to-back from Anderson and sophomore
Ike Schmidly both scored a run, adding two to the JMU lead and making it an 8-2 ballgame.
A solo homer from Braxton Church and an RBI single later in the inning scored two for App State, making the score 8-4.
Ninth Inning
Senior
Coleman Calabrese led off with his fourth homer of the season, as the Dukes added a second run later in the inning to make it 10-4 on a groundout.
App State didn't go down easy, as a Tyler Lichtenberger single added a run to the tally. Back-to-back singles scored another run to make it 10-6, but Tyler Figeroa was thrown out at third trying to advance from first to end the game.
Game Notes
- Wyatt Peifer scored four runs, setting a new career-high.
- For the second time in four games, Jack Anderson recorded three base hits.
- The teams combined to leave 17 batters on base, seven from JMU and 10 from App State.
