GREENVILLE, N.C. – James Madison softball opened play at the Pirate Clash Friday with a dominant 11-0 run-rule victory over St. Bonaventure followed by a 6-4 setback against host East Carolina at the Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
The Dukes (3-6) opened the weekend with a pair of three-run innings against the Bonnies (0-10), as well as a five-run third to finish the opener in five innings. In the latter matchup, JMU rallied from down 4-1 with three runs in the late innings, but a two-run sixth propelled the Pirates (7-5) to the win.
JMU collected 17 total hits on the day, which included four by
Madison Edwards, who had two in each game.
Payton List also produced the only home run in either game on a three-run homer in the first inning against SBU.
Game One: JMU 11, St. Bonaventure 0 (5 inn.)
- The Dukes wasted no time jumping in front, as List launched a three-run home to left field in the top of the first. It was List's second homer in 2026.
- JMU added three more runs in the second. Lisey St. Jean stole second base to force a fielding error that scored Emma Jo Evans. After a Kylee Gleason sacrifice fly plated St. Jean, Kendra Lewis scored on a RBI single from Edwards.
- The Dukes broke the game wide open in the third, tacking on five more.
- After a fielder's choice made it 7-0, Lewis doubled to left center, plating both Emily LaGrand and Evans. The Dukes added runs off a RBI single from Aynalem Zoet and a Carsen Sanders fielder's choice.
- Edwards was 2-for-2 with a double, one RBI and a run scored, while List led all players with three RBI on her first-inning home run.
- Six different players had stolen bases, which matched the most by JMU in a game since March 10, 2022.
- JMU's pitching staff conceded just three total hits and two walks. Kirsten Fleet earned the win in the circle after going 4.0 innings and striking out four batters.
Game Two: East Carolina 6, JMU 4
- The Pirates opened the game with the first three runs of the game over the opening two frames. After a pair of runs in the first frame, Anna Sawyer extended ECU's lead to 3-0 with a RBI double to left center.
- After each team traded runs between the third and fourth innings, JMU began to chip away at the lead, eventually tying things up at 4-4 in the sixth.
- Down 4-1, Edwards hit a single to right, scoring Cali Legzdin. The Dukes got within a run when Gleason scored on a stolen base attempt.
- JMU tied the game in the top of the sixth when Evans hit a sac fly to left, scoring Mia Tribul from third.
- In the bottom half, ECU responded, doubling off the left field wall and later scoring during an attempted steal to secure the win.
- Edwards was 2-for-3 with one RBI and a walk to lead the Dukes. ECU had three batters with multiple hits, led by Sawyer's 3-for-3 day. The Pirates tallied 10 hits, as opposed to JMU's seven.
