Pete Johnson spent 17 seasons between 2001 and 2017 as the James Madison football equipment manager before transitioning to his new role as the head equipment manager for JMU's baseball and softball programs in 2018. Johnson has been with JMU Athletics in a full-time capacity since 1997, when he began his career with the basketball teams.
During his tenure with football, he was responsible for equipment maintenance, inventory and purchasing. He organized game-day and practice set up and works with the coaching staff to coordinate practice sessions. Johnson also supervised a student staff and oversaw the transportation of JMU equipment to road-game sites.
In past years, Johnson has sung the national anthem at numerous JMU athletics events and recorded with JMU’s band, the Marching Royal Dukes.
Prior to his transition to football, Johnson worked with the Dukes’ basketball programs from 1997 to 2001 in their equipment room and was a student manager under former men’s basketball Head Coach “Lefty” Driesell while he was a JMU student. He was also an assistant coach at George Washington High School in Danville for five years.
Johnson has been a certified equipment manager since June 2002 and is a member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association. He graduated from James Madison with a bachelor’s degree in history.
He is married to the former Elizabeth Ann Tyler and they have three daughters: Hannah Anderson (24), Elizabeth Tyler (22) and Whitley Johnson (10). His daughter, Elizabeth is a senior psychology major at JMU, and Whitley is an avid JMU softball fan.
