Jake Van Roekel is the Assistant Athletic Direcot for Academic Success, as he oversees all academic advisors and works directly with the football program, as well as swimming and diving, women's golf and women's tennis.
He meets regularly with student-athletes to monitor their academic progress, develop degree plans that fit their career goals, and build strong study habits and professional skills. He has experience as a high school teacher, in student-athlete leadership and development, and as a collegiate academic advisor.
He believes in building genuine relationships with the student-athletes and holding each other to high standards to ensure the best collegiate experience possible. He has worked with high-risk students and probationary students to develop and implement academic plans to allow them to graduate from James Madison University with a degree in their desired field of study.
Jake believes that you should leave any situation you encounter in a better position than when you found it. He hopes that his work with the student-athletes at JMU helps them to become better students and individuals, and that they feel prepared for life after college when they graduate from JMU.
Jake is a member of the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A). He works closely with the association to attend regular professional development sessions to best assist the student-athletes he works with.
Jake holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences and an M.A.T. in Secondary Science Education from The University of Pittsburgh.
