BALTIMORE, Md., Aug. 31, 2007 -- JMU junior midfielder Kimmy Germain's (McLean, Va./Langley) second-half goal lifted the Dukes to a 1-0 win at Loyola in the season-opener for both women's soccer teams Friday afternoon on Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.
Freshman midfielder Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) started the play with a short corner kick to senior defender Laura Hertz (Newport News, Va./Woodside), who was running unmarked down the near sideline.
Hertz chipped the ball over the Greyhounds' defense and onto Germain's foot in the box. Germain turned and beat Loyola goalkeeper Brittany Henderson with her shot 8:45 into the period.
Loyola controlled the pace early in the game, just missing a chance in the fourth minute. Junior midfielder Lea Day crossed a ball from the right side of the field; however, it slid just past the foot of freshman midfielder Lina Staropoli who was sliding in front of the goal.
The Dukes had a near-miss opportunity in the 18th minute. Freshman Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville) had a clean run down the near sideline. She hit a medium-paced shot to the right of Henderson, but the Loyola goalkeeper made a diving save to thwart the scoring chance.
JMU had its chances again later in the first half. The Dukes drew four corner kicks in a five-minute span, but the Dukes were unable to register a shot-on-goal from any of the opportunities.
The Dukes' best chance before halftime come in the 41st minute. Freshman Katie Dye (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock) struck a hard shot f
