GREENVILLE, N.C., October 21, 2008 -- The James Madison University women's golf team tied for 11th out of 20 teams at the ECU Lady Pirate Invitational, held this week in Greenville, N.C. The Dukes carded a 321-301-309--931 to tie with Western Carolina.
Leading the way for JMU was sophomore Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) as she recorded her third top-20 finish in four starts this season. Gunnarsson recorded a 76-75-78--229 to finish tied for 19th out of 102 participants. Earlier this season, the sophomore from Sweden finished 14th at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate and 13th at the 2008 Stono Cup.
The Dukes also place two other golfers in the top-30 overall, as sophomore Laura Mesa (Manizales, Columbia/Colegio Granadino) and freshman Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Haw./Kalani) tied for 27th, two strokes behind Gunnarsson. Sakamoto recorded a team-tournament-low round of 72 in the tournament's second round, finishing with an 82-72-77--231. Mesa carded an 80-76-75--231.
Sophomore Kristen Harrington (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) finished fourth in Madison's five-man team, carding a 83-79-79--241 to tie for 67th place. Freshman Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Columbia/Gimasio La Montaña) rounded out the team in a tie for 77th. She carded an 86-78-80--244.
