CHARLESTON, S.C., October 7, 2008 -- The James Madison University women's golf team continued its fall schedule as the finished second out of eight teams Tuesday at the 2008 Stono Cup Tournament in Charleston, S.C. The Dukes shot rounds of 315, 310 and 304 to finish with a three-round total of 929.
In a field of 43 golfers, Madison placed two golfers in the top-ten overall and three in the top 15. Sophomore Laura Mesa (Manizales, Columbia/Colegio Granadino) led the way for Madison, finishing tied for third, while freshman Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Haw./Kalani) tied for eighth. Mesa, a second-team All-CAA selection as a freshman, shot rounds of 78-76-74--228 to record her third-career top-five finish.
Sakamoto shot a team-low round of 73 in Tuesday's final round on her way to her first-career top-ten finish. The freshman finished with a 231 after carding rounds of 80, 78 and 73.
Two other sophomores participated in the 42-woman field for JMU as Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) continued her solid play, finishing in 13th, while Kristen Harrington (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) tied for 17th. Gunnarsson, who led JMU with a 14th-place finish in the season-opener, shot 78-78-79--235 to record her second top-15 finish. Harrington recorded rounds of 83, 80 and 78 to finish with a 241.
