MIAMI, Fla., Feb. 17, 2009 -- The James Madison women's golf team finished seventh at the Qdoba Invitational held this week at the Don Shula Resort in Miami, Fla. JMU finished in the middle of the 14-team field after shooting rounds of 302, 317 and 311 for a total of 930.
Leading the way for the Dukes was sophomore Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) who tied for eighth after carding rounds of 73, 74 and 77 for a three-day total of 224. Lynch finished six shots off the pace set by tournament champion Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville.
Sophomores Laura Mesa (Manizales, Columbia/Colegio Granadino) and Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) and freshman Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Kalani) all finished in a three-way tie for 43rd. Mesa fired rounds of 74, 83 and 80 to reach her 237, while Gunnarsson carded rounds of 80, 81 and 76. Sakamoto shot 75, 84 and 78 in her three rounds.
JMU's final participant was freshman Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Columbia/Gimasio la Montana) who tied for 58th after carding an 80-79-83--242.
LaCrosse beat out the other 74 golfers in the field by shooting a 74-72-72--218. She was followed by Iliska Verwey (73-73-74--220) of Georgia State in second, Sydney Cox (77-72-72--221) in third and a four-way tie in fourth.
