GREENVILLE, N.C., April 5, 2009 ? Senior men's golfer Tim Driver (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) shot a third-round 7-under-par to edge out UNC Wilmington's Josh Brock by one stroke and win the Ironwood Pirate Invitational. Sunday's 65 was a career-low round for the senior and helped pace the Dukes to a third-place finish out of 17 teams in the event.
Driver added a pair of 73s in the event's first two rounds to finish with a 5-under-par, 211 in the event. It was the first individual championship for the senior.
He was joined in the top 20 by fellow senior Fielding Brewbaker (Salem, Va./Salem), who finished tied for 19th in the event. The Salem, Va., native carded a 76-72-75=223 to record his fifth top-20 finish of the year.
Junior Michael Meisenzahl (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) recorded his sixth top-25 finish, tying for 22nd. Meisenzhal fired a 76-76-72=224. He was followed by freshman Garrett Whitmore (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) in a tie for 58th and sophomore Matt Neely (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) who tied for 66th. Whitmore carded an 81-75-76=232 while Neely fired a 77-77-80=234.
UNCW's Brock (72-70-70=212) finished one stroke behind Driver to take second in the tournament. Rhode Island's Taylor Fontaine (66-76-72=214) finished third while Newberry's Ben Lown (73-68-74=215) and Furman's Daniel Bowden (73-70-72=215) rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth.
Host-school East Carolina won the tournament, firing rounds 291, 291 and 292 to finish 10 strokes ahead of UNC Wilmington (302-290-293=885) in second place. Madison (302-296-288=886) finished a stroke behind the Seahawks in third place. Wofford (303-297-288=888) took fourth while Rhode Island (301-293-295=889) rounded out the top five in fifth.
