SUNSET BEACH, N.C., Sept. 27, 2009 - The James Madison men's golf team carded a final-round 290 to finish in third out of 16 teams at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate. The Dukes shot a 280 on Friday and a 289 in Saturday's second to finish at 5-under-par, 859 in the three-day event.
JMU has now finished fifth or better in its last eight events and 12 of its previous 13.
Junior Michael Meisenzahl (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) fired a Madison-tournament-low 68 on Sunday to lead the way for JMU in a tie for fifth. Meisenzahl finished the event at 5-under-par 211 after carding a 72 and a 71 in the tournament's first two rounds.
Freshman Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) shot one-under-par to finish tied for 16th after carding a 71-71-73=215 in the three-day event. Sophomores Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each shot a 3-over-par, 216 to finish tied for 34th. Smith carded a 69-72-78 while Wellde shot a 69-76-74.
Sophomore Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) rounds out the Dukes five-man team in a tie for 41st after carding a 71-75-75=221.
The Stetson Hatters took finished at 23-under-par to win the team championship. They shot a 274-283-284=841 to finish five strokes ahead of Wofford College. The Terriers entered the final round tied for the lead but fired a 289 on Sunday to finish in second. JMU was third, followed by Campbell (282-293-286=861) in fourth and Belmont Abbey (296-284-283=863) in fifth. Guilford College (294-288-288=870), Elon (292-293-285=870), Villanova (287-296-287=870) and Murray State (296-285-289-870) all tied for sixth, with Appalachian State (287-294-291=872) and George Mason (286-298-288=872) rounding out the top 10 in a tie for 10th.
Wofford's Mark Joye won the individual championship, shooting an 8-under-par, 208 to finish one stroke ahead of a pair of Hatters. Stetson's Sam Ryder (66-72-71=209) and Micah Jacobsen (69-72-68=209) tied for second, followed by George Mason's Marshall Tinsley (67-75-68=210) in fourth. Wofford's Garrett Medeiros (69-71-71=211) and Mike McKenzie (72-68-71=211), Stetson's David McAndrew (69-69-72=211) and Campbell's Matt Moot (71-72-68=211) all tied with Meisenzahl for fifth.
The Dukes will return to action Oct. 5-6 in Gordonsville, Va. as they play in Liberty's Frank Landrey Invitational.
