HUMACAO, Puerto Rico, March 11, 2010 - The James Madison men's golf team carded a 296 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for 10th out of 14 teams at the Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate held at The Flamboyan in Humacao, Puerto Rico this week.
The Dukes finished the tournament with a 312-300-296=908 and moved up from 13th after the end of the first round into 10th.
Sophomores Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla/Nease) and Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tied for 25th at 10-over-par. Smith carded a 74-80-72=226, while Wellde shot 77-74-75=226. Junior Michael Meisenzahl (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) finished one stroke back in a tie for 29th.
Senior Jhonny Montano (Cochabamba, Boliva/Cochabama Cooperative School) tied for 49th after shooting an 82-74-77=233, while junior Matt Neely (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) rounded out the five-man team in a tie for 55th. Neely carded an 82-79-74=235.
USC Upstate placed three golfers in the top six to claim the tournament's team title. The Spartans were the only team to finish under par after recording a 3-under-par 861, including a 9-under-par 279 in the first round. Old Dominion (299-285-284=868) finished seven strokes back in second, followed by tournament-host St. John's (303-285-295=883) in third and Rollins College (294-295-298=887) in fourth. Johnson and Wales rounded out the top five after shooting a 296-294-302=892.
USC Upstate's Josh Gallman and Brian Horton tied for the individual championship. Horton carded a tournament-low 67 on Wednesday to move up from eighth on the final day. Old Dominion's Eric Onesi (74-70-69=213) and Seton Hall's Brandon Park (70-73-70=213) tied for fourth, with Colin Dolph (71-72-71=214) rounding out the top five.
The Dukes return to the golf course on March 22-23 in Williamsburg, Va. for the First Market Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary.
