WILLIAMSBURG, Va., March 23, 2010 - The James Madison men's golf team carded a 296 on Tuesday to move up eight spots to seventh place among 22 squads in the final round of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate at the River Course at the Kingsmill Golf Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
JMU finished the two-day, 36-hole event with a 597. The Dukes carded a 301 in Monday's opening round to finish the day in 15th.
Freshman Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) did not compete as one of JMU's team-five, but was Madison's top individual performer, finishing tied for sixth in the field of 120 golfers. Vince carded a 1-over-par 143 after shooting rounds of 69 and 74 on the par-71 course.
Senior Jhonny Montano (Cochabamba, Bolivia/Cochabamba Cooperative School) led the Dukes' team scoring, shooting a 75-72=147 to finish tied for 18th. Junior Michael Meisenzahl (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) ended the tournament two shots back of Montano in a tie for 32nd.
Sophomores Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) finished tied for 37th and 43rd, respectively. Smith carded a 77-74=151, while Wellde finished one stroke back after shooting a 75-77=152. Junior Matt Neely (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) tied Wellde for 43rd, firing a 77-75=152.
Missouri's Jace Long claimed the individual championship after finishing with a 3-under-par 139. Delaware's Justin Martinson and William & Mary's Conor O'Brien tied for second at 1-under-par 141. O'Brien's teammate Brandon Parker (71-71=142) tied Nathan Peck (73-69-142) of St. Bonaventure for fourth, while Maryland's Donnie Shin (71-72=143) tied Vince for sixth.
Led by Long, Missouri beat William & Mary by seven strokes for the team championship. The Tigers carded a 288-287=575, while the Tribe finished with a 292-290=582. Maryland (292-292=584) finished third, followed by Rutgers (292-298=590) in fourth. Towson (294-301=595) and DePaul (297-298=595) tied for fifth.
The Dukes return to the course on April 5 for a head-to-head, 36-hole match in Lexington, Va. against Washington & Lee.
