LEXINGTON, Va., April 5, 2010 - The James Madison men's golf team split a rare head-to-head match with Washington and Lee in the Buck Leslie Challenge held at the Lexington Golf and Country Club on Monday.
The Generals won the stroke play portion of the challenge 290-293 while the Dukes won match play 7-1.
During stroke play, JMU was led by sophomore Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and senior Jhonny Montano (Cochabamba, Bolivia/Cochabamba Secondary School). Smith carded an even-par score of 71 while Montano finished at 2-over-par 73. Sophomore Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) shot a 3-over-par 74 in his first action since March 1 while fellow sophomore Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Ellicott City) ended the round with a 4-over-par 75. Junior Michael Meisenzahl (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) rounded out the five-man team with a 78.
Tim Gavrich led the way for W&L with a 71. Robert Womble and Wilson Anthony carded a 72 and 73 respectively, while Matt Langan finished with a 3-over-par 74. Joe Gibson shot a 78 to round out the Generals five-man team.
Freshman Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) recorded the best round of stroke play, shooting a 1-under-par. He was joined by sophomore Jack Bonifant (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood) and junior Matt Neely (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) as individual participants. Bonifant carded a 75 while Neely shot a 76.
Neely led the Dukes in match play, cruising to a victory over Matt Helton, 8&6. Mozingo beat Rob Claxton 7&6 before Bonifant and Smith sealed the victory with 5&4 wins. Meisenzahl triumphed over Gibson 3&2 while Montano and Leeper outlasted Gavrich and Watts with 1-up wins.
JMU returns to the course on April 16 in Hot Springs, Va. at the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association Championships.
