EAST LANSING, Mich. - The James Madison women's golf team put together the third-best final round and moved up to finish sixth at the 2011 Fossum Invitational, Sept. 17-18. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Michigan State University, was played at the Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
The Dukes entered the final round in ninth place but moved up three spots with a 23-over 311 in the last 18 to finish at 69-over 933 (316-307-311), two shots better than Indiana in 10th. Host Michigan State won its own event with a 28-over 892, 15 shots ahead of runner-up Ohio State at 907. Michigan was third at 46-over 910, with Kent State (917) and Miami (Ohio) (925) rounding out the top five teams.
Madison was paced by sophomore Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao), who rebounded from last week to post her first top-20 finish of the season with a tie for 13th at 13-over 229. Senior Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani) and freshman Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines) were next for the Dukes, tying for 27th at 18-over 234, with freshman Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va.) next in a tie for 32nd at 20-over 236. Senior Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio La Montana) completed the JMU effort with a 64th-place finish at 258. Michigan State's Caroline Powers took home medalist honors at 1-over 217, four shots clear of Yugene Lee of Michigan at 221.
After two tournaments in a week, JMU will take two weeks to prepare for its next tournament, the UNC Greensboro Starmount Classic. The tournament will be played Sun.-Tue., Oct. 2-4 at Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
