PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. - The James Madison women's golf team finished third at the 2012 Golfweek Program Challenge, Sept. 9-11. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (Par 71 - 6,003 yards) in Pawleys Island, S.C.
JMU improved two shots on its second round to post a 17-over 301 in the final 18 and finish at 54-over 906 in third. Campbell led from start to finish with a 54-hole total of 8-over 860, 40 shots ahead of runner-up Central Arkansas at 48-over 900. Boston College, who was tied with the Dukes through two rounds, finished fourth at 62-over 914, with Troy completing the top five schools at 67-over 919.
Junior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) and true freshman Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) tied for top Madison honors as both posted a 12-over 225 to tie for 10th. Thiagaraj improved in each of her final two rounds, capping off the tournament with an even-par 71 in the final round. Sophomore Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) was next in a tie for 13th at 13-over 216, including shooting an even-par 71 in the final round, 10 shots better than her second round. Sophomores Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) and Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster tied for 33rd at 25-over 238. Campbell's Brooke Bellomy shot a final-round low 3-under 68 to take medalist honors at 2-under 211, three shots better than runner-up Julia Roth at 1-over 214.
The Dukes will next be on the course next week, traveling to Louisville, Ky., for the Wild Eggs Cardinal Cup Mon.-Tue., Sept. 17-18. The tournament, hosted by the University of Louisville, will be played at the University Club of Louisville.
