BLACKSBURG, Va. – The James Madison women's tennis team found success on Friday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg, Virginia, advancing three additional Dukes to the main singles draw. Five Dukes open the main singles draw on Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
"Today started off very well," Head Coach James Brycestated. "We played singles with good energy and focus. Doubles was a little disappointing, but I know those girls will bounce back at the next tournament and learn from their mistakes. Dylan did a great job qualifying for main draw as well as Rachel with the lucky loser card. Overall, if we can be a little more prepared tomorrow, we will have success."
Freshman Dylan Owens(Olney, Md./Sherwood) opened her first ITA regional event with a pair of singles wins in the qualifying draw, earning a berth in the main singles draw. She dropped Daphne de Chatellus (Georgetown) in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) in the qualifying round-of-32 before defeating Katya Salas (Richmond) in two sets (6-4, 6-0) in the round-of-16. She advanced to the main draw of 64 on Saturday, where she will face Marshall's Kai Broomfield at 2 p.m.
Sophomore Rachel Nelson(Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win in her qualifying round-of-32 match against Navy's Rozel Hernandez. In the round-of-16, she opened with a 6-0 win in set one against Richmond's Gaby Rosales, but fell in the second and third sets (6-4, 6-1) to lose the match 2-1. Nelson, however, received a lucky loser card after a qualifying player pulled out of the tournament and advances to tomorrow's main draw of 64. She is slated to take on George Washington's Teodora Radosavljevic at 1 p.m.
Freshman Kimmy Herrock(Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake) did not play in the qualifying round because she was on the alternate list and made it straight into the main draw of 64 where she faces Olga Barscheheuskaya (VCU) at 11 a.m. Senior Taylor Pinchoff(Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) and sophomore Alex Huie(The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) were automatically selected for the main draw and begin play on Saturday with Pinchoff facing Mariely Hassey (Liberty) at 12:30 p.m. and Huie taking on Sansitha Nandakumar (VT) at 1 p.m.
In the first half of the doubles main draw, Herrock and senior Sarah Khan(Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) fell 8-3 to Dina Karina and Monet Stuckey-Willis (Temple) in their round-of-32 match. Huie and Pinchoff received a bye through the round-of-32 for the second half of the doubles main draw, and open competition in the second half round-of-16 on Saturday.
