MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The James Madison women's tennis team went 3-2 against opponents from Liberty and 2-3 against foes from Duquesne across singles and doubles play on day one of the West Virginia University Martha Thorn Invite at the Ridgeview Racquet Club in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Five Dukes earned singles victories on the day, with two coming against Duquesne and three coming against Liberty.
"I thought the team played pretty well today," Head Coach James Brycesaid. "Our singles play from most was solid; unfortunately, our doubles was not. As long as we make adjustments in doubles action tomorrow and continue our strong singles play, we will have a good final day to our fall."
Junior Cara Wirth(Reading, Pa./Wilson) picked up a two-set victory (6-2, 6-4) over Duquesne's Spencer Caravaggio while sophomore Rachel Nelson(Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) swept Duquesne's Sara Mitrovic in straight 6-4 sets. The JMU duo paired up for doubles action, falling 8-3 to Liberty's Belen Rivera and Mariely Hassey.
Freshman Dylan Owens(Olney, Md./Sherwood) faced Liberty's Nicola Wellman in singles competition, earning a 7-5 victory in set one before securing the match victory with a 6-2 win in set two. In doubles play, Owens teamed up with sophomore Emily Bradshaw(Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Blyth Academy) against Duquesne's Chandler Consonery and Ally Miller, dropping the match 8-4.

Senior Sarah Khan's (Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) singles win also came in three-set fashion. She earned a 1-0 advantage in the match over Britany Yang (Liberty) with a 6-2 victory in set one. Yang tied the match at 1-all with a 7-5 win in set two before Khan secured the match victory with a 10-2 win in the decisive set three.
