BLACKSBURG, Va. – Freshman Kimmy Herrock(Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake) and senior Sarah Khan(Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) teamed up for the Flight 'C' Doubles championship Sunday on the final day of the Hokie Fall Invitational at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
"This weekend was another chance for us to move in the right direction, and I truly believe we did that," Head Coach James Bryce related. "Our doubles play was very strong plus our depth was consistent throughout the tournament. Also, for our top players to stay over .500 for the weekend was exceptional. However, we still have a lot of growth to make as a team, and we need to use this tournament as experience for the future and learn from our mistakes."
Herrock and Khan fell behind 4-0 to Radford's Taylor Fay and Natalie Sayer before storming back to take both the match and flight title 8-6 in the championship match.
In Flight 'D' Singles play, Khan won the consolation final by default with a walkover (injury) against UMBC's Shannon Cleary. In Flight 'B' Singles action, Herrock defeated fellow freshman teammate Dylan Owens(Olney, Md./Sherwood) in straight sets (6-2, 6-3).
Owens and sophomore Emily Bradshaw(Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Blyth Academy) won 8-3 in their Flight 'B' Doubles consolation match with sophomore Rachel Nelson(Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) and junior Cara Wirth(Reading, Pa./Wilson).
Nelson and Wirth each appeared in their respective flight championship matches. In Flight 'D' Singles, Nelson dropped a two-set decision (6-1, 7-6(4)) to Liberty's Evangeline Crist while, in Flight 'E' Singles, Wirth fell in three-set fashion (3-6, 6-2, 6-0) to Liberty's Lauren Mabe.
Bradshaw battled back from being one set down (6-4) to VCU's Alejandra DeLasa in the Flight 'C' Singles consolation final, winning set two 7-5 to tie the match at 1-1. DeLasa, however, was able to claim set three 6-3 for the match victory.
Senior Taylor Pinchoff(Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) won the Flight 'A' Singles consolation final with a hard-fought, two-set victory (7-5, 7-6 (7-2)) over Marshall's Kai Broomfield. She also teamed with sophomore Alex Huie(The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) to win a consolation match in Flight 'A' Doubles 8-6 over VCU's Daria Berezhnaya and Ludivine Burguiere. Huie won her own consolation match in Flight 'A' Singles 6-4, 6-3 against Morehead State's Andrea Leblanc.
