SOUTHPORT, N.C. - The James Madison men's golf team could not make up ground and finishes fifth at the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship, April 25-27. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the CAA, was played at The Founders Course at St. James Plantation (Par 72 - 6,784 yards) in Southport, N.C.Â
Playing in twosomes with Drexel, Madison could only post a 14-over 302 and finished at 40-over 904 for the tournament. College of Charleston took home the team title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals by shooting an even-par 288 in the final 18 to finish at 10-over 874, seven shots ahead of runner-up Towson at 17-over 881. William & Mary was third at 24-over 888, with UNCW in fourth at 25-over 889.
Freshman Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) was JMU's top finisher as Cole put together a 1-over 73 in the final 18 to finish at 10-over 224 in a tie for 12th. Senior Tucker Koch (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep.) and junior Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) tied for 21st at 15-over 229, with Smith posting a 2-over 74 in the last round and Koch a 7-over 79. Junior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C./Sumter (Newberry)) and freshman Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy (S.C.)) tied for 31st at 22-over 236, as Pattoropong rallied in the final round to improve his second round score by 11 shots with a 4-over 76.
Second round co-leader Juan Veloza of Towson was the tournament medalist following a final round 3-under 69 that gave him a 54-hole total of 5-under 211, two shots better than runner-up John Jonas of College of Charleston at 3-under 213. Those were the only two players under par for the event, and Veloza earned an automatic bid as an individual to the NCAA Regionals for his performance.
