JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The James Madison women's golf team finished 19th at the 2014 Web.com Intercollegiate, April 7-8. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Jacksonville University, was played at Marsh Landing Country Club (Par 72 – 5,967 yards) in Jacksonville, Fla.
Madison could not put it together in the final round and posted a 33-over 321 to finish at 71-over 935. No. 35 Florida State, who led after two rounds, cruised to a 5-under 283 in the last 18 and won the team title at 13-under 851, 24 shots clear of runner-up East Carolina at 11-over 875. No. 24 Ohio State was third at 13-over 877, with No. 17 UCF in fourth at 18-over 882. Maryland completed the top five teams at 19-over 883.
Junior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) had her best finish of the year with a fifth-place finish at 3-under 213 following a final-round 2-over 74. It is Brewer's second career top-five finish and her third straight top-20 placing, while her 213 is a career best by seven shots. Senior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) was next in a tie for 87th at 22-over 238. Junior Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Phillippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) placed 94th at 26-over 242, while junior Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) was 95th at 27-over 243. Sophomore Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) tied for 96th at 29-over 245.
Florida State's Matilda Castren took home medalist honors at 12-under 204, winning by four shots over teammate Alex Milan and Juliet Vongphoumy of Maryland at 8-over 208.
JMU will return to the course to defend its league title at the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship, Fri.-Sun., April 18-20 at St. James Plantation's Reserve Course in Southport, N.C. Brewer is also the defending individual medalist with the team victor earning the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
