ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The James Madison women's tennis team continued its success on day two of the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational as it advanced four singles competitors and two doubles tandems to championship matches in their respective flights on Saturday at the Brigade Sports Complex.
"Today was another day to get better as a team," head coach
James Bryce said. "We did a great job in doubles this morning but need to learn to finish off our singles matches when leading. The girls are competing hard and I am looking forward to them playing for some flight championships tomorrow."
JMU had two players go 3-0 between singles and doubles as sophomore
Alex Huie (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) and rookie
Dylan Owens (Olney, Md./Sherwood) will each play for flight titles on both sides tomorrow.
Huie took down St. Bonaventure's Fatya Amiri in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, followed by a 6-3, 6-7(2), 10-8 win over Lehigh's Christina Auyeung in the semifinals to advance through to the "Flight A" championship match. Huie, along with senior doubles partner
Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield), will play for the "Flight A" doubles crown after dispatching Lehigh's Auyeung and Jamie Campisi in the semis by the score of 8-3.
Owens rallied past Lehigh's Kristin Godau to take her "Flight D" quarterfinals match, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 and later downed St. Bonaventure's Lauren Doversola in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-3. Owens will face senior teammate
Sarah Khan (Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) for the flight championship. Khan notched a pair of wins in "Flight D" with wins over George Mason's Mina Saygi, 6-2, 6-2, and Navy's Claudia Mackenzie, 6-2, 6-0.
On the doubles side, Owens and sophomore
Emily Bradshaw (Mississauga, Ontario/Blyth Academy) conquered Towson's duo of Cailey Easdale and AJ Gomer by the score of 8-4 to reach to title match of "Flight B."
Sophomore
Rachel Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) was the fourth JMU player to win her way to a championship match after she took a pair of straight set wins from Navy's Noelle Kaufmann (6-3, 6-3) and Loyola's Amanda Lanciano (6-0, 6-1) in "Flight C."
The Dukes had two other singles victories on day two of the event as freshman
Kimberly Herrock (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake) won her "Flight B" quarterfinal match against Navy's Rozel Hernandez (6-3, 6-1) and Bradshaw claimed an 8-4 victory versus Lehigh's Breezy Maravich in a consolation match in the same flight.
Madison will complete the opening weekend to its 2014-15 season on Sunday.
