ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The James Madison women's team wrapped up its first weekend of action by winning four flight championships on Sunday at the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational, held at the Brigade Sports Complex.
The Dukes won two singles titles while also taking a pair of doubles crowns.
"Overall it was a successful weekend," head coach
James Bryce said. "The girls are improving each day and understanding our expectations. We still have a lot of work to do to get ready for the spring but I am excited about this group of young ladies."
Freshman
Dylan Owens (Olney, Md./Sherwood) led the squad by taking flight titles in both singles and doubles.
She defeated senior teammate
Sarah Khan (Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) in the championship match of "Flight D" in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. She also teamed up with sophomore
Emily Bradshaw (Mississauga, Ontario/Blyth Academy) to win the "Flight B" doubles title, as the duo took down Navy's Amanda Keller and Allie Pavlansky by the score of 8-2.
Also claiming a singles title Sunday was sophomore
Rachel Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes). Nelson secured the "Flight C" crown by defeating George Mason's Marjike Boers in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
The tandem of sophomore
Alex Huie (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) and senior
Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) took home the "Flight A" doubles championship after cruising to an 8-1 triumph over Navy's Claudia Mackenzie and Katie Porter. Huie also took on Ksenija Tihomirova of Fairleigh Dickinson in the title match of "Flight A" but she came up short, falling by the count of 6-3, 7-6(3).
