Four Dukes Undefeated on Day One of Hokie Fall Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The James Madison women's tennis team posted a 10-5 showing over both singles and doubles competition on the first day of the Hokie Fall Invitational, hosted by Virginia Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia on Friday.
"Overall, we improved as a team today," Head Coach James Brycestated. "Going 6-1 in doubles shows signs of improvement, and the team is implementing our philosophy. We let a couple of singles matches get away from us, but we will bounce back tomorrow and I'm looking forward to watching us compete."
Freshman Dylan Owens(Olney, Md./Sherwood), sophomore Rachel Nelson(Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) and junior Cara Wirth(Reading, Pa./Wilson) each earned 3-0 combined showings on Friday, each with a 2-0 record in doubles action and a 1-0 record in singles play.
Owens teamed with sophomore Emily Bradshaw(Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) for a pair of 8-5 victories in the Flight 'B' Doubles bracket. They started with a win over Penn State's Melissa Minniti and Lisa Petruzillo in the round-of-16 before taking down UMBC's Alice Taylor and Hanna Victorsson in the quarterfinals.
Nelson and Wirth partnered for a pair of wins in Flight 'B' Doubles as well. They stopped Wofford's Lauren Reid and Mareli Sanchez 8-3 in the round-of-16 and overcame Liberty's Evangeline Crist and Mariely Hassey 8-4 in the quarterfinals.
Wirth rolled to a two-set victory (6-2, 6-0) over Jennifer Christhelf (UMBC) in the Flight 'E' Singles round-of-16. Nelson rounded out her first-day wins with a two-set showing (6-0, 6-3) over Shannon Cleary (UMBC).
In Flight 'B' Singles action, Owens dropped Daria Berezhnaya (VCU) in two sets (6-1, 7-5). In the Flight 'C' Singles bracket, Bradshaw opened with a 6-4 win in set one over Taylor Shukow (Penn State) before falling 6-4 and 6-2 in sets two and three. She will compete in the Flight 'C' consolation bracket on Saturday.
Freshman Kimmy Herrock (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake) went 2-0 on Friday, including a 6-2, 6-1 win over UMBC's Alice Taylor in the Flight 'B' singles round-of-16. She also tallied an 8-3 victory with senior Sarah Khan(Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College) in Flight 'C' Doubles quarterfinal action over the matched duo of Alek Savic (MSU) and Lauren Mabe (Liberty).
In her opening round match of Flight 'D' Singles, Khan fell in straight sets (7-5, 6-0) to Crist (Liberty).
Sophomore Alex Huie(The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) and senior Taylor Pinchoff(Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) went 1-1 in Flight 'A' Doubles action on day one. They opened the round-of-16 with an 8-2 win over Marshall's Kai Broomfield and Rachel Morales before dropping an 8-3 decision to Penn State's Katia Blik and Dasha Sapogova.
Both Huie and Pinchoff lost in straight sets in the round-of-16 of the Flight 'A' Singles bracket. Huie was unable to overcome Radford's Natalie Sayer (6-3, 6-4), and Pinchoff was defeated by PSU's Sapogova (6-1, 6-2).
The Dukes return for the second day of the Hokie Fall Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4.
