Men's Golf Places Third at Patriot Intercollegiate

LORTON, Virginia – The James Madison men's golf team shot its best round of the tournament, which was also the top final round, and moved up two spots to finish third at the 2014 Patriot Intercollegiate, Sept. 28-29. The two-day, 54-hole event was played at Laurel Hill Golf Club (Par 71 – 7,010 yards) in Lorton, Va.
Madison shot a 5-under 279 in the final round to finish at 9-over 861 in third, as all four Dukes were at 2-over 74 or better, with three players finishing the round at under par. Missouri shot a 3-under 281 in the last 18 and won the team title at 1-under 851, three shots clear of runner-up Marshall at 2-over 854. After JMU in third, Seton Hall was fourth at 14-over 866, with George Washington rounding out the top five teams at 24-over 876.
Redshirt-sophomore Connor Walters (Salem, Va./North Cross) had his best collegiate finish with a fourth-place finish at 1-under 212 following a final round 1-over 72. Sophomore Ryan Cole (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) and senior Jon Weiss (Florence, S.C./Sumter) also posted top-20 finishes, as the duo tied for 20th at 4-over 217, with Weiss shooting a 3-under 68 in the last round and Cole recording a 2-under 69. Sophomore Poom Pattaropong (Minburi, Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy (S.C.)) shot his second straight 1-under 70 and finished one shot back of his teammates in 24th at 5-over 218. Senior Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) was the final JMU scorer with a 2-over 74 in the last 18 to tie for 50th at 12-over 225. Playing as an individual, freshman Jack Floydd (West Sussex, England/Ardingly College) tied for 40th at 10-over 223.
Missouri's Ryan Zech took home medalist honors after a final round 4-under 67 gave him a 54-hole score of 4-under 209, one shot better than Drexel's Christopher Crawford and Clark Robinson of Marshall, with Walters two more shots back.
JMU will have two weeks to prepare for its next tournament, as the Dukes will travel to Rockville, Maryland for the 2014 Maryland Terrapin Invitational. The tournament will be played at Woodmont Country Club on Mon.-Tue., Oct. 13-14.
