TALLAHASSEE, Florida – The James Madison men's golf team dropped one spot in the last 18 holes and finished 10th at the 2015 Seminole Intercollegiate, March 14. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Florida State, was played at the Southwood Golf Course (Par 72 – 7,172 yards) in Tallahassee, Fla.
In a field with nine top-50 teams according to Golfstat, Madison trimmed one shot off its second round score with a 2-over 290 to finish at 1-over 865 for the tournament. Host No. 2 Florida State shot the best round of the tournament with a 17-under 271 to leap six spots and take the team title at 21-under 843 by three shots over second-round leader East Tennessee State at 18-under 846. No. 8 South Carolina was third at 17-under 847, with No. 7 Georgia Tech (16-under 848) and No. 23 Virginia (12-under 852) finishing out the top five of the 17 team field.
JMU was led by senior Trey Smith after he shot a team-best 3-under 69 in the final round to move up to a tie for 18th at 3-under 213. Sophomore Ryan Cole tied for 28th at 1-under 215, while seniorJon Weiss tied for 55th at 6-over 222. Sophomore Poom Pattaropongwas next for JMU in a tie for 62nd at 8-over 224, with freshmanJack Floydd was the final Duke, tying for 74th at 12-over 228.
ETSU's Gudmundur Kirstjansson led start-to-finish, shooting a 3-under 69 on the final day for a 54-hole total of 17-under 199. He finished three shots clear of Florida State's Jack Maguire at 14-under 202 and four shots better than Will Starke of South Carolina in third at 13-under 203.
JMU will be back in action in a week, playing at the Middleburg Bank Men's Intercollegiate, Sunday-Tuesday, March 22-24. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by William & Mary, will be again played at Kingsmille Resort's River Course. Last year, the Dukes finished fourth of 27 teams in the event, with Pattaropong finishing as the top JMU player in a tie for 10th.
