JMU Finishes Eighth at Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – The James Madison men's golf team slipped in the final 18 holes and finished eighth at the 2015 Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate, March 22-24. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by The College of William & Mary for the 38th time, was played at Kingsmill Resort, the River Course (Par 70 – 6,765 yards) in Williamsburg, Va.
With cold weather for the second straight day of the tournament, the Dukes posted a 19-over 299 and finished at 38-over 878. Radford rallied from four shots back to post a 19-over 859 and tie with Loyola (Md.) to extend the tournament to a team playoff, where RU earned the team title. Missouri was third at 25-over 865, with Maryland in fourth at 27-over 867. Penn State rounded out the top five teams in the 30-team field at 28-over 868.
Senior Jon Weiss was the top finisher for the Dukes in a tie for 21st at 7-over 217. Senior Trey Smith was two shots back at 9-over 219 in a tie with fellow JMU Duke sophomore Poom Pattaropong, who had the low round of the day for JMU with a 1-over 71. Sophomore Ryan Cole tied for 60th at 14-over 224, with redshirt-sophomore Connor Walters tying for 140th at 31-over 241.
Matt Oshrine of Loyola (Md.) had the only under-par score of the tournament, earning medalist honors at 2-under 208. Patrick Flavin of Miami (Ohio) and Temple's Brandon Matthews tied for runner-up at even-par 210.
Madison returns to the course Monday-Tuesday, April 6-7 at the Cowboy Classic, hosted by the University of Wyoming. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course in Chandler, Ariz.
