WILMINGTON, N.C. - The James Madison men's golf team
(296-293 - 589)Â finished fifth at the 2016 Seahawk Invitational at the Par 72 Country Club of Landfall on Monday after the tournament was cut from 54 holes to 36 holes due to inclement weather.
Continuing his ever-consistent play this season, junior
Ryan Cole (E, T-14th) was the top representative for the Dukes in the tournament after shooting 2-under in Sunday's first round and 2-over on Monday. Cole has now placed amongst the top two James Madison finishers in every tournament this spring.
Several other Dukes saw improvement over Sunday's scores including sophomore
Matt Cowgill (+3, T-27th), senior
Chris Kapsak (+9, T-49th) and redshirt freshman
Connor Walters (+9, T-49th). The trio carded a 72, 72 and 75 to rise 13, 24 and 13 spots up the individual leaderboard respectively in the final round.
Duke University's Matt Oshrine (-7, 1st) entered Monday tied for first, but created a two-stroke separation from Army West Point's Marcus Plunkett to take sole possesion of first and secure the tournament's individual title. Thanks in part to Oshrine's efforts, Duke took home the tournament's team title with a 280-282 - 562 to shoot 14-under par as a unit.
Rounding out the scoring for JMU was sophomore
Jack Floydd (+12, T-62nd), who slipped 37 spots on Monday after carding an 11-over par 83 in the final round.
The Dukes will return to action for the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by Charlotte, at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C. on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10. The tournament marks the team's final tune-up before the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Championships in Southport, N.C. at the end of April.
QUOTING HEAD COACH JEFF FORBES"We just weren't able to put things together this tournament. We have a break before UNC Charlotte's tournament so we'll work on some things in practice and look to compete for another title there."
