Ignacio Montero closed his week with his first collegiate top-10 finish on Saturday to lead the James Madison men's golf team at The Battle of Stono Ferry, hosted by College of Charleston at the par-72, 6,756-yard Links at Stono Ferry.

The freshman racked up four birdies on the day as he posted a 2-under 70 in his final round to move up a spot on the leaderboard and into a tie for seventh at the 68-player tournament with a 6-under 210. Montero's finish is the highest of his young career, besting his tie for 11th at the Camden Collegiate Invitational two weeks ago.

As a team, the Dukes carded a 2-over 290 on a tough scoring day, climbing a pair of spots into a tie for seventh at the 11-team event.

Senior
Matt Cowgill posted his best round of the week, carding a 1-under 71 to climb into a tie for 23rd at 217 (+1) for the week. His 13-spot jump on Saturday was the second-largest climb of any player on the final day. Junior
Ben Tucker posted his second-best finish at JMU, closing the week in a tie for 32nd at 219 (70-73-76).

Walker Cress bettered his score for the second straight round, carding a 2-over 74 to climb into a tie for 53rd at 226 (+10), while senior
Jack Floydd closed the JMU scoring with a 3-over 75, finishing one stroke ahead in a tie for 47th (225; +9).

Playing as an individual, sophomore
Quinn Tardif closed his first tournament of the season with a 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for 38th at 220 (+4), marking a new career low at a 54-hole tournament.

The Dukes have closed out the fall portion of their 2017-18 season, taking the winter off before resuming their campaign on Feb. 11-13 at the UNCG/Martin Downs Collegiate at Martin Downs GC in Stuart, Fla.
