Ben Tucker carded a season-best 3-under 69 to lead the James Madison men's golf team on the final day of the UNCG/Martin Downs Collegiate, hosted by UNCG at the Martin Downs Golf Club's par-72, 6,802-yard Osprey Course.

Tucker tallied three birdies across a bogey-free final round, vaulting 14 spots on the leaderboard to close his week in a tie for 18th at 217 (+1), setting season bests for both highest finish and 54-hole total at the 69-player tournament.

As a team, the Dukes posted their best round of the week, firing a 3-under 285 to keep their hold on sixth place at the 10-team event, closing the tournament at 870 (+6).

Sophomore
Walker Cress continued his steady play, joining seniors
Jack Floydd and
Matt Cowgill with rounds of even par on the final day. Cress wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 14th, his second top-15 finish of the year, while Cowgill was tied for 21st and Floydd tied for 42nd.

Playing as an individual, freshman
Ignacio Montero posted his second collegiate top 10, closing his week with a 4-under 68 to climb into a tie for 10th at 3-under 213. Sophomore
Quinn Tardif and freshman
Worathon Zeng each carded final rounds of 1-over 73, as Zeng finished tied for 21st at his first collegiate tournament and Tardif closed in a tie for 35th.

"Today was an improvement over yesterday's round and a step forward after yesterday, but we need to get back to work and get better from top to bottom. We certainly can't put ourselves in an early hole against the caliber of competition we want to be matched against."

UP NEXT
In two weeks, the Dukes will head to Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla. to take part in the 2018 Seminole Intercollegiate, hosted by Florida State University. Last year, the Dukes captured fourth place at this event in their second tournament of the spring.
